2026 Seasonal Outlook

Odisha is India's most cyclone-prone state. The Odisha coast, particularly between Paradip and Gopalpur, has experienced some of India's most destructive cyclones β€” the 1999 Super Cyclone, Phailin (2013), Fani (2019). Bay of Bengal depressions also form the primary monsoon rainfall mechanism for Odisha. Monitor VayuMet's wind gust and MSLP layers during the June–December season.

Note: Koraput and southern Odisha receive enhanced rainfall from the Eastern Ghats orographic effect. When Bay of Bengal depressions track over Odisha, all districts can receive 50–100+ mm in 24h β€” GFS 6-hourly cumulative maps on VayuMet are useful for tracking these events.

Monsoon 2026 Outlook for Odisha

Coastal Odisha (Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Puri)

Coastal Odisha receives the monsoon onset around 10–12 June β€” one of the earliest in east India. Bay of Bengal depressions making landfall on the Odisha coast are the biggest rainfall drivers β€” these bring 100–200 mm in 24–48 hours over the coastal belt. Cyclone risk is highest between October and December. The 2026 monsoon outlook for coastal Odisha is near-normal.

Northern and Interior Odisha (Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Sambalpur)

Interior Odisha receives 1,200–1,500 mm annually from the monsoon trough and BoB depressions. Rourkela and Sundargarh border the Chhattisgarh plateau and can receive intense localized rainfall during active spells. The 2026 outlook for interior Odisha is near-normal.

Southern Odisha (Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri)

Southern Odisha, with the Eastern Ghats providing orographic uplift, receives the highest rainfall in the state β€” Koraput averages ~1,800–2,000 mm. This region also receives additional moisture from the Bay of Bengal branch tracking from AP/Telangana. The 2026 outlook for southern Odisha is near-normal.
